Music heals

2019 Grammys saw Alicia Keys and her prominent co-hosts (Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett, Jennifer Lopez and Michelle Obama) opened the event highlighting music to be “…the one place where we can all feel truly free” (Lopez) and “music helps us share ourselves…it allows us to hear one another” (Obama). Music connects people.

As well as relating to stories shared through music, the effects of singing is found to boost the immune system and decrease the levels of the cortisol (stress hormone). Singing helps to promote a relaxation technique through deep, controlled breathing such as those benefits in exercises and meditation.

KOPWA has regular music therapy and singalong sessions. Singing in unison encourages trust between individuals and therefore creating a sense of engagement amongst residents, thus causing residents to be happier and hopefully healthier.
